Description
Based on the serial number A1669, this is a Czech Model 98/22 Mauser manufactured at the Brno (CZ) factory, likely in the early 1920s.
Production Context: The 98/22 was the first rifle adopted and produced by the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic after World War I, using machinery and parts obtained as reparations from the German Mauser Oberndorf factory.
Serial Number Range: The "A" prefix indicates it is from the early, high-quality production runs (A, B, C, D blocks), each generally consisting of 10,000 rifles. Given that the "A" block followed the initial no-prefix run, this rifle was manufactured early in the 1920s.
Features: These rifles were highly similar to the German Gewehr 98, featuring a 29-inch barrel, but often lacked the finger grooves on the stock and featured different rear sights (tangent-leaf instead of the Lange-Vizier "rollercoaster" sight).
Turkish Service: Many, if not most, of the 98/22 rifles, including early, non-Turk marked ones, were sold to Turkey in the late 1920s for service in the Middle East.
Condition/Value: These are considered high-quality, reliable rifles and are often found in the US importer market (frequently marked with imports). They are well-regarded for being "full-sized" Mausers.
Note: The "A" prefix makes this a very early, desirable example of the 98/22, as many were later refurbished or used heavily by Turkey.
